Picard Lattices of Families of K3 Surfaces

Picard Lattices of Families of K3 Surfaces bysarah-marie belcastro Chair: Igor Dolgachev It is a nontrivial problem to determine the Picard Lattice of a given surface; theobject of this thesis is to compute the Picard Lattices of M. Reid’s list of 95 fami-lies of Gorenstein K3 surfaces which occur as hypersurfaces in weighted projectivespace. Reid’s list arises in many problems;...

Group Actions, Cyclic Coverings and Families of K3-surfaces

In this paper we describe six pencils of K3-surfaces which have large Picardnumber (15 ≤ ρ ≤ 20) and contain precisely five singular fibers: four have A-D-E singularities and one is non-reduced. In particular we describe these surfaces as cyclic coverings of the K3-surfaces of [BS]. In many cases using this description and latticetheory we are able to compute the exact Picard-number and to desc...

construction of vector fields with positive lyapunov exponents

in this thesis our aim is to construct vector field in r3 for which the corresponding one-dimensional maps have certain discontinuities. two kinds of vector fields are considered, the first the lorenz vector field, and the second originally introced here. the latter have chaotic behavior and motivate a class of one-parameter families of maps which have positive lyapunov exponents for an open in...

Lyapunov exponents, dual Lyapunov exponents, and multifractal analysis.

It is shown that the multifractal property is shared by both Lyapunov exponents and dual Lyapunov exponents related to scaling functions of one-dimensional expanding folding maps. This reveals in a quantitative way the complexity of the dynamics determined by such maps. (c) 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Lyapunov Exponents

The analysis of potentially chaotic behavior in biological and biomedical phenomena has attracted great interest in recent years (1–6). Although no universally accepted mathematical definition of the term chaos exists, Strogatz (7) provides a working definition as ‘‘aperiodic long-term behavior in a deterministic system that exhibits sensitive dependence on initial conditions.’’ Aperiodic long-...
